Synopsis of class (Super Shortie Version):
 I endured sickness and muscle-loss, gained weight, but made a decision not to give up. I MADE time to exercise (even sleep deprived!), stopped eating tons of junk food and found healthy substitutions for foods I like. When I wanted to lose a lot of weight, I took natural enzymes (on an empty stomach) to help with digestion. (See info. at the bottom of this document.)

Also, when exercise became boring or did not give me results, I moved on to something else. And when I realized friends were a motivator for me, I MADE friends and worked out with them. (I have different friends for different activities and schedules.)
To lose the last 10 pounds, I’ve been taking New Sun’s Raspberry Keytone’s before breakfast and dinner. Also, I do take vitamins every day. (See info. at the bottom of this document.)
I weigh myself everyday and NEVER give up, even if I go up in pounds. Also, about every 6 months I check for INCHES lost.

Background:
As a youth, I was certainly not athletic.
 When I was in 11th grade I tried out for our highschool’s dance team. Thankfully I did make the team…I ended up loving it so much! It was a great experience for me and I ended up learning a lot about choreographed movement.
 The dance team was, alas, a very expensive sport. It cost over $1,000 and it seemed like every month there was a new expense that came up.
Although my parents wanted to be supportive, at that time it was a stress on the budget.
 Later, in college, I went out dancing with my friends several nights a week. We all LOVED to dance and would have a blast, taking over the dance floors. We were happy when we danced.
 For a few months, during that time, I even paid for a membership at a Jazzercise place. It was fun to feel the energy of those other ladies as we danced and sweat together.
 Even though I had so much fun at those classes, they didn’t give help me loose weight. I was just maintaining and gaining a little bit.
Fast forward to 7 years ago.
 I had JUST found out that I was pregnant with my daughter…3 days later, I was so sick (unable to even walk) that I had to be taken to the hospital. My appendix burst and they had to perform an emergency surgery to “clean up” the mess in my belly.
 I was sick…Poisoned feeling…When the appendix burst it released many toxins into my body. There were many complications and I ended up being in the hospital for 8 days. During that time, I lost about 8-10 pounds. It was not just fat that I lost…It was MUSCLE!
 It hurt my bottom to even walk up stairs because they were so weak.
 So, when I gained weight during that pregnancy…I gained FAT! It was not just water weight. And when my little baby girl was delivered…she was only 5 1/2 pounds! I didn’t understand where the 50 pounds came from. (Not from the brownies, I’m sure!) 😉
 Unfortunately, I had bought into two very wrong ideas:
1. “It will melt off after the baby is born.”
2. “You’re eating for two…Indulge!”

Don’t believe the lies people try to tell you to make someone feel better about weight gain.  Always keep things under control and healhty.

Weigh Everyday (A.M. only, No clothing, after you go to the bathroom, no water or food)

*What makes us so hungry
 • Not having enough protein & also fiber
 • Not taking good quality vitamins
• Not drinking enough water
*Give yourself a list of foods that you will totally stay away from.
• For me it’s french fries and ice-cream. It’s rare I will enduldge because it’s just a one way ticket to a larger size of jeans! I also have decided, months ago, to stop baking so much!

*Easy food switches to keep me satisfied.
 

Sweet tooth…

• Sugar Free candy…Hershey’s Dark Chocolate with almonds on the side, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, Stover’s Crispies, LifeSaver’s Mints (great to suck on) (I add these to my purse!)
• Find drinks that satisfy that sweetness. I like Mojito flavored Crystal Light.
• Herbal tea with a little bit of milk and stevia (or honey) about an hour before bedtime to help the night time cravings go away. (Better to have a little something than a whole lot of something “bad”.
 

Salty…
• Frank’s Wing Sauce with some hot & fresh rotisserie turkey/chicken from the deli (makes it seems like you’re eating wings!)
• Fresh cheese (from deli), and fruit or nuts. (Do not add bread)

*My tricks to stop eating the wrong things late at night:

• Herbal tea with a little bit of milk and stevia (or honey) about an hour before bedtime to help the night time cravings go away. (Better to have a little something than a whole lot of something “bad”. (Repeated from above!)

• Have a GOOD dinner…Sounds simple enough but many people want to eat something so light that they are starving by 10:00. You want to take it easy on carbs here, but make sure you have a generous amount of lean protein, some healthy fats (like olive oil or even cheese), and some veggies.

• I will allow myself a little snack, like a peice of meat with a bit of cheese, but if I’m trying to take off a few pounds, I will try to stick closer to liquids.

• Have a protein shake for dinner, if you can. You will see a weight-loss in the morning.
*How you can look at what you are eating and figure out what’s making you gain.

• Find the newest edition of the book, “Eat Right for Your Blood-Type”

• Many Foods are BENEFICIAL to You…And some that are neutral…But…
There are many foods that certain blood-types should actually avoid. If you are including these AVOID foods, it may be a culprit in your weight gain.

A type B, for example should stay away from foods like chicken and peanuts because they will make a TYPE B release lectins, making you gain weight.
But my type can also process most types of dairy easily.

For Type O, chicken acts like a medicine for them. Eating it is beneficial for their bodies. On the other hand, most milk is an AVOID for them, causing weight-gain, and bloating.

• If you look at the list of AVOIDS for your type, then you can take out items that are likely a contributing factor to your weight-gain.

• Yes, keeping a food journal is a great thing to do for a few days but make sure it doesn’t make you too food obsessed. For me, it was great to get an idea of what I was eating and how many calories went into my meals but it stressed me out!

*Carbs…Enemy or Friend?


• Carbs, to me are breads, crackers, sweets, sweet sauces, potatoes, carrots, batter on fried foods…They may be eaten in moderation.
• I don’t eat more than one piece of bread a day.
• I DO eat about a whole sweet potato at dinner.
• I DO eat some carrots…but not with butter.
• I DO eat fruits, but I try to stay away from the dried fruits, as they usually have so much sugar!
• I DO eat frittata’s for breakfast. (Spray muffin pan with Pam, add chopped spinach, sun-dried tomato, feta, toasted pin-nuts, salt, pepper and egg whites…Bake 15-20 minutes at 350.)
• Easy on your carbs at night. If possible, make your dinner carb free. Instead, add some fats to it to make it more enjoyable.

*Clean Foods…What Are They Talking About?
• Most fitness people will tell you that they eat clean.
• You’re going to need to get creative with the spices to make the difference.
• Don’t rely on fatty sauces, etc.
• Eat organic when possible.
• Eat fresh foods.
• In other words, don’t sit around eating graham cracker’s and Nutella, wondering why the scale keeps going up.

*Go to the Bathroom Every Day

*How to exercise in a joyful way:
• Try out different classes at a gym
(Zumba, spin (cycling), yoga, Pilates, weight-lifting classes, etc.

• When you enter or leave a class, take note of the way you feel…Do you think it will get better with practice? Are you able to keep up? Was the instructor a good one? Can you see yourself becoming a part of this vibe for an hour?

• Even if it’s walking in your neighborhood, take note of all the things that you can be thankful for. And when you feel yourself slowing down, try to push yourself harder. When you get home, you will proud of yourself! (Always remember to excercise smart and avoid injury.)

• Go towards exercises and movements that give you joy or pleasure. Even if you’re sweating, you can still have fun!

• You will be happier if you stretch after you workout. It will help you avoid injury and you can take this time to relax.

*How to make an energetic shift and bring light into the gym, track, or studio you workout in.

• My first experience with this was actually outdoors, running at a track. I noticed the people there would run by one another over and over and never smile. I decided to change that and began smiling at people. It felt so good and welcoming to get a smile in return. I remember feeling so awesome when I finally “broke down” a man that looked so grumpy! When he smiled back, I felt I had won a prize!

• My 2nd Experience with this is very recent. At the gym I just joined, I noticed that many of the women seemed very focused and did not seem interested in interacting with me. Even though I am outgoing, I pulled into myself and mirrored what I was receiving. Then, one day, I decided I needed to make friends there. That conscious decision began to shift things and friendly women began speaking with me right away. Then I decided I wanted people to open up more…So, setting that intention, I began being more friendly and started taking more notice in people. I began to stop breezing over faces and concentrate on who they were and the energy that radiated from them. I tried to look at them as more than just a fellow gym-class attendee, but a friend to reach out to.

• What can you do? Decide what YOU need. And then be that. Take note of what others may need, at make efforts to provide it. Are they feeling lonely? You can be that person to say, “Good morning!” Do they look like they are hurting while exercising? Send them light and good energy. Pray for them. If it is appropriate and you feel prompted, ask them if there’s anything you can do…Or just simply take note. People appreciate being “seen”.

• Step out of your comfort zone, but don’t think you have to be a social butterfly. Make friends one at a time. Usually it starts as a brief encounter, then an acquaintance, and then all the sudden you’re sharing recipes and maybe walking around the track together.

• When you are excercsing around other people, bring yourself to awareness and ask God to raise their vibrations and that of your own. See it expanding. Ask for heart connections. See them happening.

*How you can utilize the people around you and even meet new people to motivate you:

• Look at someone that has a similar body type but is very fit. Ask them what they do to get that way. Take note and make sure to compliment! (Remember my mom’s saying, “There will always be someone thinner than you, funnier than you, prettier, smarter…Just get over it now! It’s not a competition.”

• If you’re taking a new class, look for a person with a high energy level or good vibration. Stick close to them and follow their lead.

• Network with women or men that exercise together. Figure out at least one day a week that you can meet with them. Schedule it!

• Try to think of something nice that you can do for the people that are around you…It can be as simple as a smile!

*How I overcame debilitating sickness and muscle loss to begin actually running in races…without the stress of competition.

• I began slow, just walking around my subdivision. I walked with a friend but when I began going much to fast for her, I found someone that matched my pace better. It doesn’t mean you can’t still be friends, but your workout buddy should inspire YOU! Don’t worry…Soon, YOU will be the inspirer!

• Then, I began using BeachBody’s Power 90 DVDs that I recommend because there are 2 levels. So, beginners can still get a great workout but when you’re ready you can move up a level.

• After I lost most of my 50 pounds, I wanted to tone up. I figured running would be a great way to do it and finally began running with some girls during the day. We would push our jogging strollers together!

• These ladies were kind to me and even though sometimes we ran separately, at different speeds, were were all pulling for one another.

• My friend, Kathy, an experienced and talented runner, told me that I needed to join a race.
She said she only raced with HERSELF…It was such a great learning experience. Races, and big events are great to get you motivated to do something bigger and better than you have done previously. This is also a great way to get to know your exercising buddies.

• I didn’t feel competitive, except with the person that was running right in front of me. And I would “use” them to help motivate me to run a little faster. I didn’t grudge them if they “smoked” me! I actually was impressed! (Not that I was that fast, but still!)

*How to find the time to exercise.

• Get up early.

• Exercise at home, with DVDs or just in your neighborhood.

• Bring your kids with you (in a stroller, etc.)

• Join a gym and utilize the childcare centers there…You kids will make new friends and you will be a happier mom!

• Hold in your abs throughout the day. Put a discreet reminder!

*How to live your “normal” life while still reaching towards your goals.

• ONE of my dreams was to be a dancer. I would watch SYTYCD and be so sad that it wasn’t me! I was thinking too big! I needed to start SMALL!

• (Maybe the title of this class should have read, “How I Stopped Thinking Too Big and Took Baby Steps!”)
Last year, when I began taking Zumba classes, I thought that maybe I wanted to teach it! But, I preferred hip-hop. Then, I went to a Soul Grooves Hip Hop class and had a spiritual confirmation that THAT was what I was supposed to do.

Then, after attending a handful of classes, I began to have ladies telling me that they thought I had talent at it, etc. Through other people believing in me and my constant attendance and whole-hearted participation, God continued to open doors for me.
I actually tried out for an open audition at my gym. I didn’t make it because of lack of fitness teaching experience, but was asked to continue my efforts. So, I did! I didn’t take “no” for an answer and kept going to classes. I took the “no” as a chance to learn and get better.
And now, I’ve JUST begun to teach Soul Grooves and I’m so excited. And I’m thankful that I get to live one of my dreams, even at 33! (I always thought that I had missed the boat…depends on what boat I want to ride!)

What is Your Dream?

• BTW< If you go towards what gives you joy, even if you don’t make money, you will find other ways to make money and be very satisfied. I won’t be making a ton with teaching this class but I did get another offer teaching something else in my field, part-time. I’m grateful!

• My mother, Rebecca, took me through a great exercise when I was questioning my own dreams. We pictured me. I opened a door and saw myself, 3 years from now, still teaching classes. I had my 3 years older Belin giving me advice about teaching dance and other classes. She was loving it!

• Walking-Anyone
• Jogging- Slow Pace…Medium Level of fitness
• Running- Advanced…Remember you can run with friends for more fun!
• Bike riding- Anyone…Look for cycling groups on the weekends
• Spin Classes- Anyone (look for an instructor with good music…key!)
• Zumba- If you love latin dancing or would like to try (beginners welcome…no one is looking!)
• Soul Grooves- My hip-hop style of Soul Grooves is spreading around in Texas and beyond. If interested in that, I can put you in touch with the creator (Tammy)
• Power 90- Anyone
• Insanity- Advanced…will “rip” up your body in about 2 months
• Winsor Pilates…Medium fitness- I didn’t find this effective for weight-loss but I learned SO many great stretches that still help me today
• Yoga…Levels available by type of class. Also, some instructors are more hardcore than others. Realize you can push yourself further…use motivating people in the room…But don’t hurt yourself.
• The STAIRMASTER! Holy Cow! I had no idea, until a few months ago, how awesome that thing is! It’s a GREAT workout for those legs! If you find an inspirational person around you, or online, you can find some extra moves that will shape you up faster. NOTE: The first time on the Stairmaster you need to just focus on not falling off! After a couple times, you’ll get it!
• Weights- If possible, hire a personal trainer for at least a few “lessons” on how to work your body AND the equipment. Tell them you want to learn the most simple and successful techniques. Take notes! If you can’t hire a trainer, look online! Also, I like to look at what other people are doing and get ideas! (Remember, though, they may not know either!)
• If you DON’T ever use weights, you can injure yourself. Only cardio doesn’t cut it!

Closure:
Don’t give up!
Don’t think the grass is always so easy on the other side…Some people do work for it! (I sometimes look at a girl that is always snacking and envy her and her constant nibbling.)
Even if you are injured, keep doing something active! Doctor’s can help you get better but you need to actually put forth a lot of effort in recovering!
Go towards what brings you joy!
Bring more light to the world and also accept that light from others when you need it.
Recognize and be thankful for God’s tender mercies!
